first time climbers
Welcome to a new vertical world!

As with any activity, there are risks and skills to understand before undertaking. To make your first experience with us the best it can be, please take a few minutes and browse through all the information available on this web site. Many of your questions will be answered in the FAQ section and in the galleries! If you can’t find all that you need here, our staff will be happy to assist you at 216-692-3300.

We do not have staff available for walk-ins, so please call 7-10 days
in advance so we can schedule belayers to assist you.

The Cleveland Rock Gym is divided into two, main climbing areas:
  • Bouldering Areas
  • Top Rope Area
The bouldering areas are 10 feet high and very difficult for new climbers. The top rope area is 30 feet high but requires you have someone to work the safety ropes (a belayer). So you'll need one of the following to climb these "tall walls":
  1. A Belay Card issued by the Cleveland Rock Gym. If you've belayed previously you can take the Belay Test, but novice climbers will need to take the Belay Class.
  2. A reservation - so we can have staff on hand to belay for you.
Cleveland Rock Gym does not have staff available to belay for walk-ins. If you cannot belay or do not have a belayer in your party, you must make a reservation.
