mission statement
The Cleveland Rock Gym, Inc. is a small, privately owned company dedicated to using its resources to promote a healthy lifestyle, to cultivate a sense of personal, social, and environmental awareness, and to serve the global community.

1.) The Cleveland Rock Gym, Inc. was formed in late 1994 by a small group of friends and fellow climbers interested in promoting the sport of climbing in Northeast Ohio. Now, in its eighth year of operation, the Cleveland Rock Gym finds itself under new ownership. With this welcome infusion of new energy and enthusiasm, the Cleveland Rock Gym has committed itself to promoting the ideals presented in our Mission Statement. It is with much anticipation, excitement, and hope that we stride into the coming years. We have expanded our youth programs and educational efforts, and we continue to work closely with area institutions such as the Girl and Boy Scouts of America, the YMCA, Youth Outdoors, Institute of the Great Outdoors, local Metroparks and city Recreation Centers, JCCs, Cleveland State University, Lakeland Community College Summer Youth Programs, and area High Schools and Middle Schools. With persistence, dedication, community support, and a little bit of luck we can realize our goals.

2.) With all of our society’s advancements in the field of Medicine, the best ‘cure’ still seems to be an ounce of prevention. An active lifestyle has been shown to reduce stress, reduce the risk of heart disease, increase vitality, boost the immune system, and help maintain an optimal body weight. In addition to all of the physical benefits, we know that youth participating in extracurricular sports "earn better grades, behave better in the classroom, have fewer behavior problems outside the classroom, drop out significantly less, and attend school on a regular basis with fewer unexcused absences." (APA. Still, physical activity is not the only ingredient of a healthy lifestyle. To that end, the Cleveland Rock Gym is committed to providing its patrons with a completely drug and alcohol free environment (and Yes, that includes tobacco products). We also expect our patrons to adhere to our Safety Guidelines and Code of Conduct to insure that no one need endure derogatory language or inappropriate behavior. The Cleveland Rock Gym works hard to provide a supportive, healthy, and helpful environment for each and every participant.

3.) Quite a task, we know, but one that the Cleveland Rock Gym is in a unique position to develop. By necessity, the sport of climbing requires a complete and focused attention to detail, particularly with issues of safety. For the protection of one’s self, one’s partner, and one’s climbing environment, awareness is essential. And, just like your muscles, your awareness grows when exercised. Soon, that awareness spills over from climbing into your everyday life. You’ll be amazed at the change.

4.) Though it is rare to see, this is one thing I feel should be included in every Mission Statement of every organization existing. (Of course, many a company would be out of business if this responsibility were to be enforced.) Here at the Cleveland Rock Gym our volunteers work closely with our participants to ensure that they have a positive experience. However, our goal is not limited to the community within our walls. We will be working with local clean-up programs and the Access Fund to help care for and protect the habitat within which all people must exist.
